Nuit Blanche

 

Cette œuvre a fait l’objet d’une commande de Stéphane Mège pour un concert en hommage au poète Paul Verlaine dans la formation instrumentale suivante : soprano et  onze instruments.

 

 

Suite à un voyage en Italie et plus particulièrement dans les villes de Pompeii et Herculaneum, j’ai rapidement songé à écrire une œuvre autour de cette terrible tragédie, une histoire quasi opératique, mais pourtant réelle.

 

Aussi, l’utilisation de trois poèmes de Paul Verlaine de façon partielle (Promenade sentimentale, Effet de nuit et La mort) m’a permis à la fois de tenter de traduire les sentiments et images des poésies, mais aussi d’évoquer ce cataclysme ; ainsi, il existe une sorte de correspondance entre ces deux histoires.

 

Ce cycle ne peut donc, à mon sens, faire l’objet d’interprétations parcellaires.

 

Il fut écrit entre 2011 et 2012.

Sleepless night

 

This work for a soprano and eleven instruments was commissioned by Stéphane Mège for a concert paying tribute to the poet Paul Verlaine.

 

Following a trip to Italy, more specifically to the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, I was inspired to write a piece about this terrible tragedy, an almost operatic story, but actually real. So, the use of parts of the three poems by Paul Verlaine (Promenade sentimentale, Effet de nuit and La mort) allowed me to try to translate the feel and imagery of the poems whilst also referring to the disaster; there is thus a sort of correspondence between these two stories.

 

 In my view, this cycle cannot therefore be the object of fragmented interpretations.

 

 It was written between 2011 and 2012.
